When producer David Turley heard the mellifluous vocals of then-16-year-old Millie Turner at a friend’s house, the young talent had never considered herself as a singer before, but as Turley relays, “when she started singing I knew there was something really special happening.” That unique presence is captured on film in the coastal music video for debut single ‘Underwater’. Each of Turner’s carefully chosen lyrics are utterly convincing. Much of her appeal comes from the natural warmth and rawness of this performance, complemented by a minimalist alternative-dance backdrop. It’s a sweetly naive and stylish piece of electronic-pop, reminiscent of Let’s Eat Grandma and Maggie Rogers, that have certainly put the recently turned 17-year-old on many a music enthusiast’s radar. - HT
